Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

Generation Gap is back after a month-long hiatus...this time, I’ve lined up the generations of everyone’s favorite Japanese luxobarge: the Lexus LS (shaddup and get out of here you Infiniti Q45 fanboys...just kidding.) I have a feeling the first gen (the original German-beating luxury giant) will win but let’s find out...as always, vote in the poll and explain your choice in the comments below.

The options:

First Generation (XF10) 1989 - 1994

Kinja'd!!!

Second Generation (XF20) 1994 - 2000

Third Generation (XF30) 2001 - 2006 (and facelift) (Thanks to chevyfan029 drives a Ford and m2m, apex detective for reminding me the facelift exists!)

Fourth Generation (XF40) 2006 - Present (and facelift)

Facelifted XF30 no doubt. Clean and simple, understated and classy

The 2nd gen it is! It’s just starting to hint that as time goes by it’s going to look better and better.

Facelifted XF30, as chevyfan029 has already pointed out. Refreshing the XF30, it takes a visually understated vehicle and sprinkles some fairydust on it to make it look some years younger. New headlights, more distinguished rear light graphics and no fuss lik diffusors, fancy fake vents and what not. I’d go without the chrome details, but that’s a matter of taste mostly.

Its interior might not be the most modern when it comes to the center console, but it’ll waft you around like heaven.

The LS430 gets bonus points for being one of the cars with the least annoying make and model designations. They just look right where they sit.

1st gen, as Toyota spent $1 BILLION dollars (insert Dr. Evil) developing the original 1UZ. Plus it looks awesome. Dirty cheap (now), ability to get a cloth interior and no sunroof combined with the reliability of a wood-burning stove = clear winner.

Agreed. What other luxo barge has the reliability to get to a million miles and still be mildly drivable, let alone good for more thousands of miles to come? (Some may say that the old Benzes were sturdy, but not one million miles sturdy...)

Right, thanks...I put this up right before bed so I haven’t had time to edit it, will do so now...

It does look slightly better than its pre-facelift, and all LS430s are likely to be lovely rides...

Oh, it should be mentioned these are being recalled because their dashboards melt in the sun.

Yuck, that looks alarming. Question is, though: does it bring back that new car smell?

1st Gen, but the 93-94 refresh — OR go subtle cool and get the Toyota Celsior RHD version with rear massaging seats and cloth interior.

True, now that it’s just over the 25 year limit we can have all the Celsiors we want!
